Council launches revised Events and Conferences Sponsorship Program

Whitsunday Regional Council has refreshed its Major Events and Conferences Sponsorship Program to attract standout events and strengthen the region’s reputation as one of Queensland’s most Naturally Iconic destinations for festivals, conferences and cultural experiences.

Mayor Ry Collins said the refreshed program gives Council the structure and confidence to back events that bring visitors, boost the local economy and celebrate the Whitsundays as the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

“This policy gives us a smarter, more strategic way to back events that matter,” Mayor Collins said.

“We want our region to be known not just for its natural beauty but for the experiences we create.

“This approach helps great local ideas grow into signature events that attract visitors and make the Whitsundays buzz.”

Mayor Collins said the program also positions the region to capitalise on the global spotlight leading up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where the Whitsundays will proudly host the sailing events.

“The next few years are an incredible opportunity to showcase our region to the world, and this program ensures we’re ready to welcome more visitors and create events worthy of that stage,” he said.

The refreshed policy and supporting guidelines set out how Council will assess applications based on visitation, economic impact, marketing reach and sustainability.

It also includes a new focus on business events and conferences, which are high-yield opportunities that help fill midweek visitation and support local accommodation, hospitality and service industries.

Manager of Investment Attraction and Growth, Paul Hanlon, said the new framework simplifies the process for organisers while ensuring Council’s investment delivers strong outcomes for the community.

“It’s about cutting red tape at the front end of grant applications, so organisers can spend less time on paperwork and more time creating incredible experiences for locals and visitors,” Mr Hanlon said.

“This refreshed approach ensures every sponsorship dollar works harder by growing our economy, supporting our regional brand, and keeping the Whitsundays Naturally Iconic.”

Expressions of Interest for the Major Events and Conferences Sponsorship Program are now open, with two rounds each year. Successful EOIs will be invited to submit full applications for funding consideration.
