Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour Marine Terminal will be hosting an iconic event this coming April 30th and May 1st. Approximately 250 competitors and their supporters will be participating in an Outrigging Canoe Race involving up to 30 x 6 person Canoes. Departing Shute Harbour at 1 PM on Saturday the 30th April the crews will paddle south around White Rock then turn to race to the finish line at the Airlie Beach Lagoon. This event is the 2nd race in a series endorsed by the North Qld Zone of AOCRA. (Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association) The distance is 18 klm and will take the paddlers approx 2 hours to complete. The crews are made up of teams from as far south as Mooloolaba and as far north as Torres Strait. The local Club Outrigger Whitsunday will be running the event with help from Whitsunday Regional Council and monitored by our local Marine Safety Queensland officers. Come down on Saturday the 30th to see this spectacle of all these canoes and crews getting ready to race and view the start at 1.00pm from the Ferry Terminal building. Everyone is welcome and the Terminal management has arranged for 2 food vans to be present to provide refreshments to the crews and public.
