About Us

The Whitsunday Region is home to four libraries located in Bowen, Cannonvale, Collinsville and Proserpine and are welcoming, inclusive spaces for all members of the community!

Our Mission is to be pivotal places enabling the community through social engagement, learning, innovation and fun.  

Membership is free and we have something for everyone. Borrow books, magazines, DVDs and CDs. Read newspapers, surf the net, learn how to use computers, join in some of our free programs and activities, or just sit back and access e-resources from home 24/7! It’s your library – your space, check it out and enjoy!

Become a Member

Membership is free for residents living in the Whitsunday Region, or those visiting the region.

Everyone seeking full membership must provide a copy of one photo ID and one document showing proof of residency, or a local address if you are visiting our region for at least three weeks.

e-membership is available to visitors, temporary residents and those without a permanent address. 

You can either join online or in person at any library branch. If you sign up to join the library via our website, you will need to visit one of our branches to confirm your ID and have the membership activated prior to borrowing resources.

Whitsunday Region Resident Membership

Proof of residency within the region is required such as:

  • Driver's licence with a current address
  • Enrolled on electoral role
  • Current lease agreement for a period of six months
  • Rates notice

Please note that a parent/guardian will be required to provide one of the above for those under 18 years of age.

This membership allows residents to borrow up to 20 items at any one time for three weeks except for reference material, which can only be read in the library. eBooks and eAudiobooks can be borrowed for up to two weeks. 

Non-Resident Membership

Proof of stay within the region for at least three weeks is required such as:

  • Accommodation receipt detailing dates of stay
  • Letter from local employer confirming dates of work in the Whitsunday Region

Please note that you must be the age of 18 or over for a non-resident membership.

This membership provides users with a short-term three month membership and allows up to four items to be borrowed at any one time. Items can be borrowed for up to three weeks however, they cannot be renewed.

e-Membership

Proof of ID required. This category allows full access to our online resources only, including Libby, Hoopla, Press Reader and Borrowbox, plus a suite of online learning resources. The downloadable apps allow patrons to access movies, audiobooks, magazines, e-books plus the most celebrated reading resource for the little ones, Story Box Hub

The e-membership is valid for a period of 3 months. It is renewable in person only

How do I join?

Join the library at your local branch or online! If you join online, please visit your local branch and provide the required identification to complete your membership.

Membership Responsibilities

As a borrower, parent or guardian you are responsible for:

  • All items loaned on the card including those borrowed by other users of the card
  • All items loaned by any junior or young adult member that you have given permission to join
  • Paying charges set by Council for any lost or damaged items
  • Updating any changes to contact details 
  • Advising loss of membership card immediately loss is noticed

Loan Limits, Reservations and Renewals

Whitsunday Region Resident Membership 

  • Borrow up to 20 items for a three week period
  • Have up to five reservations at any one time
  • Items can be renewed

Non-Resident Membership 

  • Borrow up to four items for a three week period
  • Have up to four reservations at any one time
  • Unable to renew items

Please note that eBooks and eAudiobooks only have a two week loan period.

Renewals

Loan items can be renewed twice to extend the due date period, provided the item is not on reserve for another member. You can do this in person at the library, over the phone or online.

How do I renew my loaned item online?

  1. Go to the online library catalogue
  2. Click on My Account
  3. Login with your library card barcode. The barcode is located on the back of your card and starts with "W"
  4. Click on Loans
  5. Check the box next to the item that you wish to renew
  6. Click the renew loans button
  7. A message will appear to inform you of your successful renewal

If the process is unsuccessful, please contact the library for assistance. Reasons for unsuccessful renewals may be:

  • too many renewals;
  • item is on reserve for another borrower; or
  • the item has been recalled.

Home Library Service

Our Home Library Service ensures the information, recreation, cultural and educational needs of all library members are met by bringing the library service to the user.

This service is available to residents who are unable to visit the library and do not have family or friends who can assist them with either transport or selection and collection of library material.

Who can use this service?

People who:

  • have an illness or disability that prevents them from visiting a library in person.  These conditions may be temporary, recurring or permanent.
  • are able to visit a library, but due to mobility restrictions, are unable to transport library items home.
  • live in residential assisted living establishments such as nursing homes, hostels, hospitals.
  • are engaged in full-time care for people with a disability.
     

How do I join?

  • an initial interview with library staff to ascertain eligibility for the Home Library Service is recommended.
  • a Home Library Service Membership form must be completed and returned to the library.
  • an assessment by a library staff member will ensure the Home Library client receives their preferred reading material.

The App can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store, by searching for Whitsunday Regional Libraries.

Current members can use their library card barcode and password to activate the App.  Non-members, who are aged 18 and over, can apply for library membership through the App or you can visit your local library to sign up.
