Olympic Inspiration Makes Waves in the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday region’s next generation of swimmers had the opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s greatest Olympians, with Council arranging a regional swim clinic hosted by Olympic gold medallist Cate Campbell at the Proserpine Swimming Pool on Saturday.
Cate was in the Whitsundays as a guest speaker for Council’s State of the Region event, with Council leveraging the opportunity to deliver a special clinic for local young swimmers during her stay.
The clinic brought together swimmers from Whitsunday Swimming Club, Cannonvale Cannons and Bowen Swimming Club for a day of coaching, inspiration and unforgettable experiences in and out of the pool.
Swimmers participated in three tailored sessions for ages 6 - 9 years, 10 - 13 years and 14+ years, with each group receiving hands-on guidance and insights from Cate. Participants also had the opportunity to take photos with Cate, see and hold her Olympic gold medals and get autographs.
Mayor Ry Collins said the clinic was about more than swimming, with the event helping inspire local young athletes ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“With Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, opportunities like this help show our young people that the pathway to the Olympics can start right here in regional communities like the Whitsundays,” Mayor Collins said.
“Our region has produced and supported a number of talented athletes over the years and having someone of Cate Campbell’s calibre visit the Whitsundays provides incredible inspiration for the next generation,” he said.
“Her dedication, achievements and passion for the sport are paving the way for our future Olympians and reminding young athletes that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.”
Council extends its thanks to all participating swimmers and the local swimming clubs involved for their enthusiasm and support in making the clinic a valuable experience for young athletes.
