Council Grants and Funding Minimize


Whitsunday Regional Council has a wide range of options for providing assistance to community groups. The information below is a brief summary of those options.

Generally Council’s community assistance extends to clubs that are registered charities or not-for-profit associations. Each of the following forms of assistance is subject to specific eligibility criteria and you should read the relevant policy carefully. Community Assistance Grants Minimize

Council provides assistance to clubs/associations based within the Whitsunday Region which meet identified cultural, community, educational, sporting or recreational needs through the provision of Community Assistance Grants for equipment purchase, events and projects.

All not-for-profit, incorporated organisations in the Whitsunday Region, that meet the relevant eligibility requirements, are able to apply.  Grants are available in four areas:

  • Equipment Purchase Grant
  • Project Grant
  • Minor Event Grant
  • Major Event Grant

Three rounds will be offered in 2009-2010.  These are:

  • Round 1 – Opens 1 June 2009, Closes 30 June 2009
  • Round 2 – Opens 1 September 2009, Closes 31 October 2009
  • Round 3 – Opens 1 January 2010, Closes 28 February 2010

All applicants should ensure they read the relevant policy carefully, and that they also read and understand their obligations as set out in the Guidelines for Acknowledgement of Community Assistance Grants information sheet and the Eligibility Criteria information sheet.

General Rates Exemption Minimize

Council will exempt the total of General Rates payable on land which is used predominantly for the purpose of operating a not-for-profit community service or sporting or recreation activity. This exemption does not extend to service or utility charges (see Property Service Charges heading).

It is not necessary that the applicant be the registered owner of the land, however the applicant must demonstrate rights to use of the land for the rating period.

Council may provide a rebate equivalent to 75% of the Council rates and charges, other than General Rates, levied on properties owned or leased by applicant organisations where the service is provided exclusively for the bona fide club activity and is for the benefit of their members and/or the community.

Eligibility for this rebate will be subject to an assessment by the Council of the hardship felt by the applicant organisation by the imposition of the full fee.

The policy objectives include to promote excellence in sport, music, art and education within the Whitsunday community, contribute to the professional development of Whitsunday Elite Performers and facilitate opportunities for Whitsunday Elite Performers to develop their individual talent.
