Ergon Energy has finalised a plan which aims to restore power to 80 per cent of customers affected by Cyclone Debbie by Friday 7 April, with the remainder to be with power before Good Friday.
“We are working hard to provide power to local communities impacted by Cyclone Debbie,” said Chief Operating Officer Paul Jordon, “Our message to customers is that while the destruction has been significant, we have workers on the ground now in Bowen, Mackay, Proserpine and Airlie Beach making repairs to our network and restoring power.”
“We have already restored over one third of customers since Cyclone Debbie crossed the coast on Tuesday and we have an additional 100 workers moving into the area to boost the effort,” Mr Jordon said.
He said that in the week since Cyclone Debbie had savaged North and Central Queensland electricity network, the number of people without power had dropped to 40,000 from around 65,000 - progress he described as ‘significant under the circumstances’.”
Mr Jordon said that while the restoration plan was ambitious in light of the enormity of damage to the network, particularly in parts of the Proserpine and the network that supplies the coastal areas of Cannonvale and Airlie Beach, Ergon Energy and Energex crews were determined to restore a safe network supply across the region.
“We know that power supply is important for our communities. We’re doing everything in our power to restore the network as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr Jordon said.
Customers have been reminded to keep safe in the areas that bore the brunt of Cyclone Debbie. Even if crews have inspected the network in the area and made it safe to do repairs, there could still be fallen powerlines or service wires that Ergon Energy is not aware of.
“If you discover a fallen powerline, treat it as if it is live, and call 131 670”, Mr Jordon said. “In situations where an individual premises was deemed unsafe to restore power, customers should contact an electrical contractor to carry out required work and then contact Ergon Energy on 132296 when this work was complete.
