Whitsunday Regional Council and Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc. are again urging local businesses toget onboard with the ‘Plastic bag free March’ campaign.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said last year twelve local retailers signed on to say no to plastic bags during the month of March raising local awareness about the disastrous impacts plastic bags have on our local environment and wildlife.
“This year the Whitsunday Regional Council is again urging all local shops to sign on to thecampaign to reduce the reliance on plastic bags in the Whitsunday region and to promote the use of biodegradable and re-useable alternatives,” Mayor Whitney said.
“By saying no to plastic bags you reduce the need to produce them and therefore prevent themaccidently making their way into our marine environment,” she said.
Libby Edge, Founding Chair of Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc. said the Whitsunday region uses astaggering 180,000 plastic bags every week.
“Even if 5% of these plastic bags become litter, this amounts to 9,000 bags potentially entering our waterways and the Great Barrier Reef.
“Plastic bags are made of petroleum products, a non-renewable resource, and are a major threat to our turtles as they mistake plastic bags for jelly fish, a popular food source for turtles,” she said.
