Attracting investment and creating jobs within our region was the main priority of the Whitsunday Region Economic Development Strategy 2017-2021 which was adopted at today’s council meeting in Collinsville.
The draft Economic Development Strategy “A Blueprint for Regional Prosperity” was placed on Council’s Your Say website in late August.
The document was emailed to 102 stakeholders and attendees from the previous public forums with the invitation to provide feedback during the two week exhibition period earlier this month.
After the close of the exhibition period all feedback was discussed and although no material changes were requested, minor format and terminology changes were made.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said adopting this region’s first ever Economic Development Strategy (EDS) was an historic day for the whole community.
“The EDS identifies the three pillar industries that underpin our economy; mining, agriculture and tourism,” he said.
“Our region’s other industries are closely integrated with the big three through local supply chain links.
“The EDS has been developed in collaboration with the whole community and will be an economic blueprint to drive employment and boost growth.”
Council’s Executive Officer Economic Development and Tourism Melanie Davies said the EDS will focus our effort and investment on the activities that will grow the jobs and opportunities for the future generations.
“This means jobs for our kids and it will enable them to stay and build their homes, families and careers here in the beautiful Whitsunday Region,” Ms Davies said.
“Importantly it expands on the infrastructure and facilities for our tourist industry and encourages both government and private enterprise to invest here.”
The Strategy identifies and supports the development of “Game Changer” projects to drive future economic growth including:
• Airport & Whitsunday Trade Coast development – a transport logistics hub for our regions produce and tourism gateway• Shute Harbour redevelopment – expanding the infrastructure to access our amazing islands and reef experiences• The Marine Centre of Excellence at the Bowen Marina• 5 Star Hotel & Conference Development in Airlie Beach• Mine, rail and solar farm projects constructed and operational in our hinterland near Collinsville• Water security for the region to expand our productive land for agriculture and food production• Facilities developed to leverage our world class barramundi fishing at Lake Proserpine
