A road upgrade near the Airlie Beach Foreshore will begin next week, with extra car parking spaces and a new bus turn-around being constructed near the Whitsunday Sailing Club.
Whitsunday Regional Council’s contractor will be undertaking the works between Monday and Friday, with an expected completion of early December 2017, weather permitting.
Access to Coconut Grove will remain open so regular activities such as the Airlie Beach Markets can continue unaffected throughout the works.
There may be limited parking spaces available at stages throughout the works, as each section of the road and carpark is upgraded.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said the road upgrade would bring some much needed improvements to the area, ahead of the major Foreshore Revitalisation project which was recently announced by the State Government.
“This is a separate project funded by Council, however the improvements we are making to the carpark will complement the overall planned upgrade of the Foreshore area,” he said.
“This is just the first step in upgrading an area which is currently underutilised and has so much potential to be an attractive community space.”
Works will take place between 6.30am and 6.30pm, and signage will be in place on site to inform visitors.
