The Queensland Government is introducing a Waste Disposal Levy from 1 July 2019, as part of a waste management strategy for Queensland which aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
The Queensland Government has committed to ensuring the introduction of the levy will have no direct impact on households and will pay Council a rebate for household waste going to landfill, to offset the levy.
The Waste Levy will primarily impact on the Whitsunday region’s commercial sector and waste contractors due to the large amounts generated by these sectors.
Businesses are encouraged to look at how they can reduce waste, separate waste streams and recycle as efficiently as possible to help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Some exemptions will apply, for example the waste collected after a natural disaster or recycling charities who receive donated waste that cannot be reused, recycled or sold.
The Queensland Government have set proposed charges for the new levy which can be viewed on their website, along with further information about the Waste Levy https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/pollution/management/waste/recovery/disposal-levy
Council encourages commercial businesses to access the Chamber of Commerce Industry Queensland (CCIQ) EcoBiz program, a free initiative that helps businesses save money across their energy, water and waste bills. EcoBiz provides personalised coaching, including new services specifically targeted at assessing and reducing business waste - http://ecobiz.cciq.com.au/
